Getty Images today announced the formation of an editorial contributor group, providing renowned feature photographers unparalleled marketing and distribution opportunities, while offering customers access to powerful imagery from some of the most notable portfolios available. Getty Images' director of editorial photography, David Laidler, an industry veteran, will lead the new group.

Since the group's inception in early 2004, Getty Images has signed a select list of esteemed photographers from across the globe. Among them are Paris-based James Hill, a Pulitzer Prize winner known for his extraordinary imagery of political stories and ethnic conflicts; Washington, D.C.-based Chris Rainier, a leading documentary photographer covering vanishing cultures and tribes; and Beijing-based Katharina Hesse, a National Press Photographers Association award winner, known recently for portraying the changing face of China. Among the other highly regarded photographers new to the group and based in cities worldwide are Jean-Marc Giboux, Gilles Mingasson, Robert Nickelsberg and Pers-Anders Petterson. World Press Photo Award winner Ami Vitale and Pulitzer Prize winner David Hume Kennerly, both of whom are Getty Images contributing news photographers, will also be represented by the editorial contributor group.

"Being represented by Getty Images frees me up to focus on making photographs, rather than marketing and distributing them," said David Hume Kennerly. "The company's global promotion and distribution capabilities are unmatched. I chose them to represent my work because they not only know how to sell photography, but also are very supportive to photographers. They truly understand how we operate."

Getty Images also continues to seek out exciting, emerging talent, recently signing on Jonathan Alpeyrie, who has been covering the ongoing ethnic conflict in the Caucuses, and Jacob Silberberg, who has been gaining recognition for his work in Chad, Sudan and Nigeria.

"Getty Images is extremely proud to represent this elite group of photographers and their diverse, compelling portfolios," said Nick Evans-Lombe, senior vice president of editorial for Getty Images. "As part of our ongoing commitment to provide customers with striking, relevant imagery to visually narrate their stories, we're making a substantial investment in all of our photographers. David Laidler will do an outstanding job in providing photographers with the personalized attention of a boutique agency while also utilizing the resources of the industry's best platform to distribute their work."

In addition to collaborating with photographers to develop innovative story ideas, Laidler's team edits and packages feature stories, which are licensed globally to magazines, newspapers, book publishers, Web sites and broadcast outlets. Just last month, Getty Images worked with Pers-Anders Pettersson to place a feature story in Newsweek entitled "South Africa's New Black Elite," that was originally an assignment published in Stern, the prominent German news magazine. In a recent international edition of Newsweek, Getty Images secured placement of photographer Gilles Mingasson's feature on Latino culture in the U.S. Laidler and his team also direct the development and promotion of photographer portfolios, which can be viewed at www.gettyimages.com/photoassignments.
